General head winning over heart - help!

First time I tried using it - took me 15 minutes. I could not believe it just was not locking. I pulled out the manual which effectively said "just lock it" - I was furious.

Took a while to realise I had to put it with the letters facing up, and then turn clockwise until I hear clicks.

It might just be me, but I've filled up dozens of cars - and this is the only car to ever cause problems. things like this should not require a special way of opening - its not complicated stuff.

Yes i completely agree for the first 5 of so times i filled up i made sure my boyfriend was with me to open the damn thing, then i had to get a man in the petrol station to do it (and lock it afterwards) and now finally i can do it!

I am a lil disappointed with mine too for the reasons that were stated above too, i am only getting 39mpg out of mine and have considered exchanging it for a Mini cooper D i asked how much i would lose out they offered me £8300 for it when i owe £8800 so i took it back to where i bought it and they offered me £8800 for it so that means they are definately holding there value well!

You should easily be able to recover £8.8k from selling it privately

You have to compare like for like - so 500 1.3 Diesel with the mini D - and the 1.2, with I guess their 1.4/1.6. So if changing - replace with a 500 Diesel!!

Replacing a car with another car even if it gives 10mpg more isn't going to cover the cost of changing a car unless you do silly mileages though.

it is a supermini, not a city car...which would explain the differences you experienced...its in a different class of vehicle.

No, City car and Supermini are indeed the same class. The mk1 yaris was a supermini, but new Yaris more of a small family car with the Aygo taking over the Supermini possition with the IQ.

I personally would say go for the Yaris. Almost faultless reliability (mums had a mk1 from new. 120k in 9 years and no faults!! :)). The Yaris will also hold its value alot better, aswell as being alot more universal due to its size.

Jon.

The Yaris IS quite a big car inside and out and the boot is significantly bigger than the 500's, and it's a good car, but IMO the Yaris has no soul or personality. Utterly reliable it possibly is but, do you know anyone who's ever turned round and looked at a Yaris and said " wow what's that, I want one" or "Ooh look, it's one of those new Yaris's, it's a real beauty".
Some 500s may have their little, or not so little flaws, and mine certainly has the odd one or two, but at the end of the day, I'd still choose a 500 and another 500 infact, over a Yaris. Perhaps when I'm over 70, I might decide to test drive a Yaris at least. Mind you, my boss has a Yaris and he's only 50. AND, a few weeks ago I was talking to a very old couple in Sainsbury's car park (late 70s I guess), who had just bought a 500 Pop after trading in their J Reg Metro on the scrappage scheme. They love their 500, with their only quibble being the annoying petrol cap.

My friend owns the latest Yaris & she loves it but, compared to a 500, it looks so dull and characterless. I'm sure, as others have said, that it will be very reliable and hold its value extremely well.
I live close to a Toyota dealership, so see lots of Yaris' & most appear to be driven by the 'more mature' owner but, when all said and done, its down to personal choice. :)

The Yaris is a good car. I doubt you'd regret buying one. It may seem a bit boring, but it'll do everything you'd reasonably expect of it.
Also, have you considered the Daihatsu Sirion? It uses many of the Yaris components, including the engine and transmission (Daihatsu is essentially a Toyota-owned company), is well priced and well equiped, as well as being a little more "quirky".

Major OAPmobile though!

I agree it's not the most stylish thing about, but it's a good alternative to the Yaris, has a range of good engines and a 5 year warranty too.

I'd also suggest a test drive in the Mini too, but I guess some people may well object!
