What kind of head unit is it?
Some Blaupunkts require an additional piece of wiring harness to allow this around 15 quid.

You can also use a speaker input on some amps, or if your amp hasnt got that facility you can buy an adapter which turns a speaker input into an RCA lead

cheers for that tom! i'm almost ready to go, then I thought about the remote wire. What am I going to do about that, otherwise the amp will be on 24/7?
All I can think is having a switch inline with the power cable, but that's going to get a bit annoying after a while I think. I've got an electric ariel but I'm not sure it'll work because the ariel only comes up when the radio is on and I mostly listen to CD's. Unless one of the ariel connections is permenantly live when the ignition is on?

Many amps (like mine) have high pass inputs - from speaker terminals on your head unit to inputs on amp.
Something tells me your head unit is crap. No offence B). New straight ones don't cost very much.
