Hi knowledgeable people.
My 2006 Scudo SX 2.0 JTD has had a persistent oil leak, only slight, but for a considerable time. It was so bad they couldn't trace where it was from, so I had it steam washed and now the garage figure it's leaking from the head Gasket joint line, back of the engine. They had an endoscope camera round there to find it. The van runs well, had a new turbo last Autumn and is powerful on hills etc, but the coolant in header tank has turned black, despite all fresh coolant at last Autumn service. It doesn't loose much coolant. Just a cupful about every month.
My question is, is this a known area of weakness that could develop into a big problem? Is the oil loss due to a possible "O" ring failure? Does such a problem indicate the possibility of having to have head skimmed and a major repair?
I understand the head cannot be removed with engine in situ, it has to come out.
If such is the case, it might pay me to swap engines as it's intensively used and we don't want downtime any longer than we have to.
If looking for another engine, am I confined to only the specific 2.0 JTD unit at 109 BHP/kW or could we fit the later (2007 onwards power unit, or the Ducato engine?
Am I likely to find most breaker yard engines have head Gasket problems on high mileage units?
Any advice much appreciated.
Peter
