A simple fix. The hand brake console has 3 screws: 1 under the trim at the front; 2 in the console storage bin.
Once the mechanism is exposed, use a paint-brush to brush all the accumulated crud away.
Slowly pull the brake handle all the way up.
The toothed gear and dog are now exposed. ( I use a mirror for this ). A little bit of SPF (silicon spray). Also on where the brake cable come out of the chassis.
Release it slowly; pull it up again very slowly and catch the first position at about 15 degrees. In principle, your brakes are already locked. Another bit of tension gives a second click. If you're really paranoid, another slight pull puts the brake into serious emergency mode. Also handy if you're really nuts and want to do some fancy driving ;)
The important part is how you release the brake: pull up a bit to release the tension, push the release button and bring the handle down.

As I referred to: if you're nuts you don't need this info. Surprisingly easy with the b to do a heel-and-toe, bang it down a gear, pull up the brake until the rear threatens to become the front (keep your finger on the button), release and hit the gas. The laws of physics do the rest. Quite a remarkable little car ;)
