giving your child a daft name simply shows you dont have the right breeding, it dooms your child to a life where they are easily identifed as working class, and that means no membership to the country club, but it also means they may not get that all important job interview.

i think my favorite is "Fifi Trixibell"

that girl is only ever getting one job, sitting on old men's laps until she feel's the damp patch.

OK, so there are some really strange names on that list - but then just watch the credits on any Hollywood blockbuster...
Admittedly you won't find any Moonbase Alpha or Captain Proton XIV on the credits, but there certainly are some really strange ones.
And look back through history, it's only in recent times that we seem to have made first names 'boring'.
Not many years ago, people would call their sons Shirley (Crabtree, AKA big daddy) or Leslie/Lesley - or even Adolf.
Of course, many names are taken from the Bible - but can you imagine the ribbing your kid would get if you'd called him Onan?
I noticed there was a Gulliver on that list, although Gulliver (from Swift's 'Gulliver's travels) was a surname, his first name was Lemuel (another Biblical name).

IMO, Jordan and Andre shouldn't have called their kid Princess, just stuck with the other name.
And some of the other names on the list are just plain stupid - Fifi is fine but fifi trixibell...WTF?

i have a book about the history of british names and i found that very little changed in british names for several hundred years, it is only in the last couple of decades that there has been so much change and many new names.

what caused it? 2 things, firstly people are now exposed to far more international ideas and culture so they have different and more influences, but the main change is that your first name doesnt mean the same thing it once did. a first name was supposed to show your place in society, your religion and status and wealth and education, they were all said in one word, your first name. that has changed now and your name is simply a word used to identify you, except among the upper class, they still use a name to identify status.

my first name is a bible name, a deciple's name, i'm not religious but i'm pleased i have a bible name, it suggests that i'm from a moderate middle class background. it is still an advantage in british society.

Wouldnt be John by chance would it?

its Paul, although my Dad's name is John.

it was a great book explaining the history and meaning of names, where they came from, when they were used, who used them etc. it was great, but then i do love reading about absolutely anything as long as its non-fiction.
