Wishing to 'top up/freshen ' the grease around the rear wheel bearings purely as a maintenance measure rather than because there are any problems; Therefore reluctant to remove the stub axle with all the risks associated with correct refitting. Is there any way I could add grease to the bearings without removing this? Thanks.

No, there's not. I did that job last month. It isn't terrible. I don't think there is much risk associated with reassembly, though I was very careful for the first few miles, and I jacked up the back of the car after to check everything was still held firmly.

Thanks for that. In that case, I think I will wait and only pursue if/when I get a bearing issue. I read that tightening the 30 mm nut has to be done in a rather special way (which I didn't fully understand) to ensure the correct set up of the assembly. Perhaps a bridge too far for a medium DIY-er like me!!

You are correct, tightening up the rear wheel bearings is not, like the front wheel bearings, a simple"just nip it up until you have no play" scenario, I am in the process of trying to put the whole operation down on paper--happily send you a copy ( [email protected] ) when I have completed it.

I think you would need to cover a heck of a lot of miles to warrant regreasing the rear bearings. As they were replaced when I restored the car sixteen years ago, I'm treating mine as on a modern car...sealed for life and only replace when broken. :)
