Ok, got the cinq's interior pretty much stripped out, and heres a list of this weeks jobs;

1. strip most of the paint out of the boot of the car to expose the rust, (found 3 holes today, I'm sure there are more under the sound-proofing,)

2. Remove the excess seam sealent and start patching up the holes. Will also stitch weld certain areas as there is a little surface rust,

3. Remove rear wheels (will also be painting all of the wheels, haven't decided what colour, either plain satin black or white? Ideas anyone?) and patch the holes that are in awkward places. Will also have to run a weld up the sills as one looks really ropey,

4. Prime and paint the interior. I'm Hoping I wont have to take the headliner out, and that I can keep the re-spray to a minimum,

5. Get a couple of repair panels cut from a doner car in the scrappy, then weld up the dodgy bonnet and the valance under the windscreen. This will then need respraying, and I'll underseal the repairs I've done to the underside of the car,

6. Replace all the gaskets relating to the throttle body, and replace the fan switch, may buy a new expansion tank from the scrappy as ours looks sh*te,

7. Replace interior and rear windows. rub the bootlid down and spray that as well as it has a few rusty patches.

The car should then look as good as new. Don't know if we are selling it yet, Em's mum wants it gone, and Em wants to keep it. I'm hoping the repairs should'nt be too expensive, I have a budget of around £150, and I will only need about £50 worth of parts/panels/sheet steel and paint as I have the welder, compressor etc.

Will Keep you all posted from now on, hopefully with plenty of pics.

It's red, they're standard steelies though, so not sure if white'll work tbh. Might go with just plain satin black, thw red calipers will show through a bit better then lol.

heres some before shots,

Thats looking down inside the passengers side panel. that's gonna be a bugger to patch up. Looks as though the drain from the sunroof has left water sat there. whereabouts should it drain out?

eeek thats quite a bit of rust, has that cinq had a hard life ? mine has a tiny amount of rust on the boot lid - but as far as i'm aware, that is all.

white wheels on a red car works :)

Hmm...

My 899cc trailer car has rust a bit like yours does on the rear arches...that car also lost its passenger side jacking point due to rust...

My 1242cc has rust in a pretty much identical place on the bonnet. Id be interested to see how you solve it!

Most of the rust on the bonnet appears to on the structure, right at the front. The bit thats hangin off is just a sealing strip. My plan is to get a peice of thin plate an patch over the areas that are the weakest, but of course that depends on how bad the rust is once I get the paint and sealer off.

Got some of the passenger side rear arch done, lol seam welding is a pain in the arse!!! Just got to plate up the hole and that sides done. well, except for the hole at the front. I've decided I'm going to leave the hole in the sill, as It'll help drainage. I'm just going to make sure it's rust treated and painted.

So arc, you recon white wheels will look ok? I recon the car was driven for years without being washed. It took 5 hrs of t-cutting and waxing with a red wax to get it back to it's original colour!!! Also, the car had 5% braking when we got it (4% front, 1% rear  ) and Em drove it like that for a year as she thought the brakes were meant to be crappy lol. the centre section on the exhaust dissolved after about 2000 miles, and the backbox is on the way out now, and I found broken glass when I removed the shelf supports today, so I recon it may have sat for a while without a back window, or with a damaged one.

The arches look as though water has been getting in, but I'm b*ggered if I know how, as it's all water tight. Did fiat not galvenise the interior, as it's welding ok?

Hi
Just a quick question, why bother repairing the bonnet?
I bought a mint 2nd hand one for mine for a fiver from a local scrappy,
I know i have to paint it but you could always use spray cans or something(y)
Cheers
Adrian

The scrappy hsn't got a good one as far as I know, might be going this morning so I'll have a look. Doubt they'll let me have one for a fiver though, we'll be looking at nearer £20.

Seems Fiat galvo'd the outer panels but no inner structure. High miles through salty british winters. End result is dreaded corrosion. My last yellow car was rotten underneath. So I got rid quick. Bumper hangers at back were dust. Arches were going. I could go on..

To simply lower it would've taken ages as every nut and bolt were corroded and would've slipped or snapped. Ended up buying a 25k mile one lady owner garaged machine. Literally came apart as a new car would ...

Compared to Fiats of yore (60's 70's) the Cinqs do incredibly well, But as the earliest Sportings are knocking on 12 years I suppose nothing lasts forever..

Good luck with your grinder and mig!

Ok, did a bit of work on sunday afternoon, bit of prep really. Got 90% of the welding done today! Just got to patch the outside of the holes and then grind the patches smooth. Need to get my filler back form my mate though before I can finish the job.

Can anyone advise the best way to stop the exhaust hot spot in the wheel well happening again, and recommend somewhere i can buy tins of paint/thinners?

Cheers guys,

Got some good news today, a mate of a mate has the use of a spray booth at the weekends, and can get paint direct from the supplier at cost, so we might be getting a full re-spray! then we'd be keeping the car for Em's mum to commute to work!

heres todays work, well, bad news really I suppose!

first job was get it bonnet less and get the heater box out.
mmnakedcinq.jpg

then found this,
leakymatrix.jpg

crap, removed the heater matrix and water came out of the housing. lets hope i can get one from the scrappy!

P4070010.jpg

thats the front of the bonnet,

cinqbonnet2.jpg

and thats the back. damn, think that may be a little hard to repair. Scrappy want £40-50 for one so looks like I'll have to get one from ebay, unless anyone has one for sale?

and thats where I stopped. Well, took the exhaust off as i suspected it was leaking. But it isn't, car sounds cool now though.
