Thanks for your advice and encouragement over recent weeks, the Tipo now lives on with a scrapyard head, its driven me 28 miles to Leeds and back 3 days no trouble. Its actually quieter than before as I think my last cam was worn. Every day is a exciting as another gauge/bulb/motor randomly comes back to life :D All i need now is a service, new shocks, better tyres, oil pump, seat repairs, respray, bottom arm, front bumper

A couple of questions:
Is it ever worth renewing gearbox oil - I doubt this has ever been done?

Why do old instrument panels get so dim? Occasionally it has a fit of slightly greater brightness. All the bulbs work and I cleaned the glass a while ago.

Could a worn power sterring pump make the steering stiff given there is fluid and the pump goes round?

Oh and how do I install 'theatre dimming' interior lights in the Tipo to improve it's modernity? :D ? Jus kidding.

Cheers

Well done !!
Yes, worth renewing the gearbox oil. Will even proberly improve gear change.
Yes pump can do that. Buy some Forte power steering reconditioning fluid. Works a treat on stiff steering.
Also, consider a brake fluid change also. Will improve brakes and clutch.

Re: Good news - but some questions - and another

Done - but not always well !:D I'll try the Forte out.

On the new head the cold start advance is not working at all - I have attached the wire back to the fuel pump and tried various tightness settings . How does it work - and is it the sort of thing than can stick - and is there any way of getting it working without the bother of taking the old one off the other head - which may be a pain...

Works in a similar way to a Carb choke Bi-Metal spring. The cable pulls the enrichment device on the Pump, and gradually as the coolant warms, it closes due to the temp. Looks like you need to use your old one as iam sure they are sealed. Only way is to remove it and test in water.

Andy.

There is a diode in the dash that burns out causing dimness, dash can be stripped and repaired if your good, easy to see relevant diode to replace
