General Glow Plug Light Flashing?

Hi
I have a 1998 Fiat Ducato 2.8 IDTD Eura Mobil Sport Motorhome. And on turning the key to start it this morning the glow plug light started flashing quite a few times rapidly, after starting the engine it went off eventually. I turned the engine off and turned it back again a few times and the glow plug light stayed off. What does this mean? can anyone tell me. I'm guessing the obvious that the glow plugs need changing. Am I right?

Its a flame start plug:

After starting the plug continues to heat and diesel in injected onto it. The flashing it to show that the system is still operating. Its easy to check if it working by -carfully- feeling the intake after starting it gets very hot.
