Hi,
I have a diesel 1.3 Grande punto (75hp). Some time ago the glow plug warning light started flashing. The car took time to start in the mornings, and emitted quite a lot of whitish smoke.
Took it to the garage, found to be a problem with glowplugs. Error code P0683. One plug was shorting to earth, causing the controller to shut down. The garage started changing the set. Two were replaced successfully, two snapped. Had to drive it this way for a couple of weeks. Started easily on 2 glow plugs, no smoke. Warning light continued to flash (possibly sensing 2 broken plugs).
Then I took it to a specialised engineer for drilling with instrument for this engine type without taking the head off. Both remanining plugs were drilled out, and new ones installed.
However, after this the car again takes time to start, and emits smoke. And that's with 4 new plugs, while it was no longer doing this on 2. Could this be a fault with the drilling? Or if it were, would it be much more serious (noise in engine, loss of power, etc)? i don't know the signs of what happens if drilling goes wrong (or if there are new plugs in place - means all went alright anyway?) Where could the problem be now?
Advice is welcome)) Thanks!

My take on this is that one of the plugs that snapped was the culprit of the short, it wasn't doing it when it was broken but now that it's been replaced it's doing it again. If it was a spark plug, I'd say disconnect each in turn to see if it resolves the issue but I don't know if that's safe to do with glow plugs.
