Technical Getting door mirror off

My son's door mirror got obliterated by a considerate motorist the other night. The interior trim etc. is no problem to remove but I could not figure out (before it got too dark last night) how to get the mirror itself off: there didn't seem to be any obvious nuts or screws. If anyone has pics, that would be great.

iirc it comes off with 3 6mm allen bolts

If its a MK2 you have to take the tweeter cover off, underneath this is a large plastic nut holding the mirror on from the inside. comes off with a hammer and a screwdriver to move it round.

I'm guessing that, as a 'Y' reg, it's a MkII. Thanks for the info. Would water-pump pliers open wide enough to get a purchase on the nut?
