Getting 2004 Remote Key Fob Working Again

The remote key fob stopped activating the central locking on my 2004 Fiat. I put in a new battery, but still not working. So I assume the key fob is either faulty or there's something more I need to do to get it working.

If the fob is broken, I can get a new genuine Fiat key fob. What is the best/cheapest way to program the new fob? I have the security code card that came with the vehicle when it was new. Should I take the new key and security card to a Fiat dealer? How much will they charge to reprogram the new key? Can other companies, ie. auto locksmiths, program a new fob from the secuity card?

It helps if you say what vehicle it is.
I have just checked and assume from the ebay search it is a Fiat Scudo, if you look through my many posts recently you will see I gave details on programing those successfully based on Citroen Dispatch data as same model.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, sorry for the lack of vehicle details. Trouble is, in the past when I mention which vehicle it is admin transfer my post to the model specific section on the forum where, for my specific model, it will die a death and tumble weeds roll through that particular forum section. Though you're not far wrong in guessing the 2.0 Jtd model.

I'll have a look at your recent posts on the subject and get back to you if I have any further questions.

Couple more questions re remote central locking. Is it ever the receiving unit in the van that's the problem when keys fail to activate the locking - or usually the key that is faulty? If it is the receiving unit, are these replaceable?

(Note - as well as the Fiat security card I also have what maybe be called the master key - ie. the non-remote key that came with vehicle when new)

Sorry, I can find those posts about programming keys. Looked through 15 pages of your posts and only found one about Ducato spare key problem that didn't go into any detail.

Can I ask you to put up a link for that thread please?

It is the Mk 2 version which came out around 2008, as it is only going to try and identify the actual key fob buttons for remote door locking and has nothing to do with the immobilising or starting of the vehicle then I would try it as you have nothing to lose. The vehicle will still start when you put the key in the ignition as it reads the chip in the key to do that and has nothing to do with the door remote unlocking function.
You could try searching online for the same "key sycncing" for your Mk1.
Is there any competent key specialists in your area, I don't just mean a key cutter, I mean one that can hook his computer /laptop up to your vehicle and just reprogram new keys direct once cut as he would be able to do it easily if he is any good.
By the way I am generally off line after 9pm, I need my beauty sleep.

Just to add to this, this morning I changed the battery on a Peugeot 3008 2012 and the method that worked to reprogram the key fob and apparently applies to most of the Peugeot range, which arguably includes your Scudo Is basically sit in vehicle with doors shut, put key in ignition, ignition on but not started, hold any button on the remote fob down whilst same key is in ignition for 10 seconds release, remove key and test locking /unlocking buttons.
That has just worked for me.

Thanks again Bugsy. I'll have to get a new battery and give the syncing a go. Googling Mk1 key syncing comes up with the same method as the Mk2. I'll have a go and see if it works.
