a sad loss

in my opinion he never should have been given the replacement liver, only a famous person would get it when they were in his state. what a waste of time, money and hospital places.

from sky sports...

Manchester United legend George Best has died at the age of 59 after failing to recover from internal bleeding.

Best has spent almost eight weeks in Cromwell Hospital in West London after initially being admitted with a kidney infection.

Earlier this month the former Northern Ireland international had shown an improvement in his condition and was taken off a ventilator.

However, he was readmitted to intensive care last week with breathing difficulties and his condition had gradually worsened in recent days.

Best's physician Professor Roger Williams had grown increasingly concerned over the past couple of days and conceded on Thursday lunchtime that his patient was living through his final hours.

During a glittering playing career, Best was an Old Trafford hero and helped the club to win the European Cup against Benfica in 1968.

He also picked up the European Footballer of the Year accolade the same year and scored a plethora of memorable goals.

In recent years, Best had been working as a pundit for Sky Sports and he will leave a legacy as one of the best players the world of football has ever seen.

I agree with Al though, what a waste :(

What Al said is true and it would have been a waste on anyone, I agree, I just hope that he will be remembered for some of the good things he atchieved with his life instead of the negative parts.

It would be very sad if all anyone remembered of the man once called 'the greatest footballer the plannet has ever seen' by Pelé, was remembered as an alcoholic and a waster.

Somebody please back me up??

George Best RIP

As the famous man himself once said, In 1779 i gave up both women and drink, it was the worst 20 seconds of my life..

What a hero.. He died for something he liked and loved..

Agree about the waste though..

One Day in the dark streets of Belfast,
A young man was born too soon,
For had he been born today, boys,
This game would know no gloom,
For he stood only five feet eight inches,
He weighed only eight stone,
By day he played with his friends therer,
By night he played on his own.
Then Early one morning a letter,
Arrived in the post at his home,
'Will your son please board the ferry,
From Ireland to England alone',
So a young lad arrived at Old Trafford,
Prepared to give his all,
But England's a long way from Belfast,
And the Emerald Isle did call.
It took all of Matt Busby's persuasion,
To make him come back for the test,
For he knew that he'd found a genius,
Who was so far ahead of the rest,
He could run at the speed of a greyhound,
Turn on a sixpence and shoot,
Dribble his way through a minefield,
While still only wearing one boot.
Hos playing brought crowds in their thousands,
His antics attack from the press,
But they still had to bow down in tribute,
And acknowledge true genius...
GEORGE BEST

He'll be remembered for all the reasons. The genius, the talent, the playboy, the drink.

George Best

Remembered for all the wrong reasons.
Wife beater, drug taker, alcoholic and a adulterist. He nobbed Miss Universe, with thousands of pounds and drugs in his pockets, and a room full of drink.

Although we all forget how much of a great footballer he was. 7 month into his football career and he was playing for Northern Ireland.
Was named English and European footballer of the year in 1968.

Played 422 games for Man United and scored 178 goals, not bad being a winger.

Best was one of the best football players of all time(If not the BEST).

Poor ould Best, hopefully he will be remembered for the right reasons. I was a bit miffed when they showed people leaving flowers before he had even passed away yesterday.

May he rest in peace..

re:

George Best was the Best and should be remembered as just that... the Best!!

He lived his life how he wanted to and for his reasons and warned others not to follow in his footsteps.

It was because he was famous his life was there for everyone to see and not becuase he wanted to live out his final years in the media spotlight.

He didn't get his transplant because he was famous but that fame ensured his alchoal abuse was on show for everyone see and to judge.

Georgie sleep well!

He should also be remembered as an example of what can happen when you loose self-control with regards to booze and drugs.

His footballing career effectively ended at 26. He would almost certainly have had a good few years more at top level football and many more years managing and/or coaching, had it not been for his lifestyle.

Sad, in many respects.

Was George best actually "the" best?

Personally, I don't think so. Whilst his talent was outstanding, we're forgetting some others, Johann Cruyyf, Franz Beckenbauer, John Charles, Pele, Eusebio, Maradonna (fat cheat) and also some of the later talent in such as Bergkamp, Rijkaard, Coemann, Van Basten, Gascoigne (another pisshead) etc etc.

George Best will always be remembered for football, women and drink in equal quantities and he will be inextricably linked to flambouyance in football, much as Barry Sheene will be remembered in GP.

Like him or not, it's an extremely sad way for a nation to see you die, after a brilliant but short carrer.

Emma - change your name to Milly Tant.

IMHO, he was one of the best in the world ever. His career might have been short compared to most, but as that saying goes "He who burns twice as bright, burns half as long". When you saw him play, he was always good, always had a trick up his sleeve, always capable of embarrassing the opposition. All of those names mentioned are indeed great footballers, many of them flawed in some way too. But were they on the same level ? Best wasn't just lauded by the fans, he was lauded by his peers too, which sets him apart from many of the others.

His demise is well documented, but Best never blamed anyone else. The criticism heaped upon him by some over his liver transplant and subsequent fall back into alcoholism is unwarranted. Many transplant recipients do the same. Their illness is not just a faulty liver, it is alcoholism. Best was always on a hiding to nothing because of his fame (or infamy). I lost my sister to a liver related illness. She never received a transplant, but I would never begrudge George his chance.

It's a sad day, now made even more so by the tragic loss of World Rally champion Richard Burns this morning.

Well, I suppose (for once) I cant disagree - in the main, although we all have our own favourites of course; depending on our own teams.

Beeing a Leeds Uts man, I cant escape the Billy Bremner/Alan Clarke years. Living on former glory I think it's referred to as (in my case).

Ah, yes, Leeds. They were good once ;)

Although you have to hand it to them after last Saturday's performance, coming back from 3-0 down to win 4-3 :)

I remember the Clarke/Bremner days. And who could forget the Gray brothers (Eddie & Frank) :)

Best certainly made Jack Charlton look a fool on a number of occasions, and that was no easy feat :)
