Technical Gearbox whine

Hi Everyone!

I have recently bought an 1985 Mk1 Fiat Uno. It is a 1.1 litre 55 hp model with a 4 speed manual transmission. My problem is, when I accelerate some whine coming (I think) from the transmission. The sound is similar as the reverse speed whine. It only occures when I accelerate, but if I slow down or just rev the engine there is no whine. Is it normal? If something wrong with my transmission is it possible to replace it to a 5 speed model? Outside of town a 5 speed transmission would be better. If someone has any idea please tell me! Thank you!

Hi there,
The first thing to do is to check if you have oil in the gearbox.
If you need to top up (put more oil) make sure you put the correct oil as you can kill the gearbox.

I am not sure about the whine in your car, but in one of my other cars, (not an Uno) I have been told that the whine, is gearbox output bearings.

The whine in my car (actually a Saab 9000) is exactly as you describe the whine in your Uno.

Nunesaf,Rawill,Thank you for your post! Tomorrow i am going to check the transmission fluid level. If it is OK than i will check for other clues. I dont really know which is the gearbox output bearing. Is it somewhere near the differential? If the fluid check does not help i will visit my mechanic and ask for checking those bearrings. Today I had a little freetime during work and i realise that, it is possible to change the gearbox to a 5 speed version. After the weekend i will make some phone call, maybe i could find a used 5 speed transmission.

Update: I have checked the oil level but it was on the correct level. When i was under the car i noticed a small oil leak at the seals at the
inboard end of the driveshaft. It is on the driver's side. In this case i have to check the oil level more often until i take the car to my mechanics, but now the oil level was OK.

Slight oil leaks are pretty normal with that design - the rubber boot has a seal that wears the driveshaft after a while.

The whine isn't easy to cure - it could actually be any of the gearbox bearings or even some wear in the gears themselves - I think the best idea is to look for a five-speed gearbox to put on. It is also a good time to change the clutch, so if that needs doing, you might as well get on with it.

Otherwise, it's safe to use the gearbox for a long time even though the whine is there. It is unlikely to get any worse.
