Technical Gearbox refurb.

HI all,
Have just become proud owner of 1999 Fiat Ducato 1.9 turbo which has a gearbox problem. One mechanic attempted a repair with 'rings' ( no idea what that means) after which 1st and 2nd gear became solid. I am now looking for someone who can refurbish the gear box, and would appreciate any recommendations. Wakefield area, but willing to travel.

Best look for a scrapyard box, new spares for old Fiats are becoming impossible to source, most prior to 2000 have been binned by the agencies and there are very few aftermarket gearbox spares. But there will still be very many in the scrappers.

Before you do anything drastic, change the gear oil.
The Ducato/Boxer/Relay versions of these early vans have an issue where rainwater runs off the scuttle panel and straight onto the top of the gearbox, where its taken in through the breather tube. This water then emulsifies with the gear oil causing a grey sludge which makes gear changes very difficult.
Also, get the cable lengths of the gearchange checked and adjusted, could just be that.

If the suggestions already made don't sort your problems and you still need a repair / refurb, I would recommend Mr Gearbox Ltd in Sheffield they sorted my problems last year when I sheared teeth from the 5th gear wheels on my Hymer with 2.8 JTD. He has a good knowledge of elderly ducato boxes and actualy had stock of the spares required for my repair. Was back on the road within a day!

good luck trying to find a breakers yard today-if you scrap a car today it usually goes for crushing almost immediately-no one is interested in spares any more only the scrap metal value -sad but true-
