Gearbox crunch in third and getting worse, Sisley only covered 21,000 miles but sounds like synchromesh has gone altogether. Anyone know where to get these gearboxes rebuilt?

Hi, welcome to the Forum. Is this the one that sold on eBay recently for £3700?

The 4x4 gearbox is very straightforward, not much different to the 2wd. When you're talking about syncromesh both boxes are the same design so you could go to any gearbox reconditioners and they should be able to fix it for you.

I haven't changed the gearbox oil but note from the garage receipts (of which there are many) that it was topped up with Castrol SAF-XO Gear Oil but posts on this site have suggested that there are problems using oil with a GL4 rating which could damage the synchromesh, GL3 is recommended. Maybe this is what has damaged it?
 
Yes this is the 1991 Sisley with 21,000 on the clock. It has some problems through lack of use and I will need to do some work on the brakes too, the pedal nearly hits the floor before the brakes engage which made me have kittens when I approached a junction for the first time! I assume this is the master cylinder as the rears have no adjusters. Amazingly it passed and MOT in Sept with the brakes as they are.
 
I have a guy not more than a mile from me who did my 4x4 panda gear box for £300 That was for removal from car and throw a load of new bearing into it and fit a clutch kit that I provided. His location BD13 1LP(y)
 
just changing the oil *may* fix the problem, you need to get hold of SAE 85/w90 GL3 oil otherwise known as "ZC 90".

theres some for sale on ebay at the moment. if i remember correctly, you need 2 and a half liters. for the panda box.
make sure the CV boots are in tip top condition. on these gear boxes the CV boots hold the oil in so if one perishes and splits, you loose a lot of gear box oil. (the cause of many cinquecento gear box deaths i find when walking around our local scrap yard :( )

£300 is not bad for the clutch too, but it's 240 miles round trip from darkest Rutland to Bradford so might try someone nearer to here but thanks for the info.

I've had a look on ebay and ZC 90 looks to be expensive and noted that gearbox oil has been a topic of much debate with 15W 40 engine oil being a suggested alternative which has similar viscosity. I'll try cahnging the oil and see if this helps before considering the gearbox rebuild.
