Technical Gearbox Probs

When selecting 1st gear in my cinq sporting, its hard to get in, sometimes you have to push hard to get it in, but there are no crunching sounds or anything, just tough to slip in. 5th gear is a big no-no. Its impossible to find, and trying to find it while going along just results in a crunch. Very occasionally it will slip in, but thats after some hard work mind. Basically, all the other gears are fine, and when your in 1st or 5th, its fine also. just getting it in is the problem. Gearbox oil maybe? Any help appreciated.

Check the selection linkages on top of the gearbox, they may be loose or worn.

Sounds common with all Cinqs. Fiat gearboxes have this reputation. I think its the synchromesh that is the problem. I find on my car to get it in to first when it wants to p**s around with you, if you release the foot brake, it goes in much easier. Personally I can't see how these two conditions are connected but im not complaining cuz, hey, it works for me!

I find that whe n my cars moving slowly i can't go from say 2nd 2 1st untill its either stopped or going very very slowbut my m8 in his punti has the same prob so i ignor it and live with it

How do i check the selection linkages? If these are worn, are they easily replaced?

Feel the balljoints, see if there is lots of movement on them. Also check that the nuts holding everything down are tight.

i have got mine in with for fiat it is the syncromesh and a bearing that has gone on mine. i have dificulty with 2nd luckly mine is under warenty so it aint costin a penny

Just to let you all know, it was my dodgy gear-knob removal and re-fitting of a new one that had caused all problems. My gear knob was constantly pushed down, enabling reverse, but not 5th. Now i just have to grip the bottom of the lever and push down to get reverse, thus enabling 5th. Strange, but i'm happy
