want to change the gearbox oil on my 2001 2.8 idTD with the famous external 5th gear

can't seem to find the correct grade listed anywhere ....anyone know?

oh for a decent ducato workshop manual

thanks very much ....you wouldn't like to pop over and help me with the change , would you ?
I see reports about dripping the fresh oil in through the sensor hole :(

Search under MYTHING i posted a full description of how to do this on a 51 plate 2.8 Ducato.

I used 75/85 Semi synthetic and put in 2.7L (which is what everyone but Fiat says is the quantity) I took out the reverse light switch which is on the top of the gearbox accessible through the bonnet once the air filter pipe was removed, dreaded doing it but it was easy once I fathomed out how!

Good luck

thanks for that also ...couldn't find your post but the tip about the air filter means I should find it easy , I shall remove the air filter assembly to make it easy to change the fuel filter while I have the bonnet off !

going to use a fuchs fully synthetic for the extra like over semi ...am checking which of their range will be best

really must get around to this before going off for the winter !

seems clear to me that the 2 litres in the fiat book refers to the non added 5th gear box , and the extra box requires the extra

HOWEVER I have just read elsewhere that the correct method is to fill the box until it overflows !

anyone care to comment on this ?

The workshop manuals I have all say the gearbox takes 2 litres but according to the Fiat dealer they refill with 2.7 litres. The reports of the 5th gear failure have supposedly been associated with the amount of oil in the transmission. As for filling the box till it overflows - from where?? as there is no level plug fitted. It can only be filled from 3 places - the reversing light switch, the speedo transducer hole, or the "phantom" breather hole that nobody has ever found? all I located on the top of the gearbox somewhere.
The fiat dealer did show me a special tool for inserting in the speedo transducer hole for measuring the oil level a few years ago.
