every shop i go into and say i need some gearbox oil for an x1/9 5 speed they say its HD40 and they don't stock it? they try giving me some ep crap and say 'that'll do' but as we all know thats a no no. What else can i ask for?

You want either a straight 90 grade oil or a 80w90 - even a 75w90 would do. The vital bit is that it must not be an EP oil unless you like your gears turning to a metallic slurry in the bottom of the gearbox.
If you can afford the extra buy redline mt90 from demon tweeks as it is about the best you're likely to come across and is very highly recommended (ignore the EP oil rule on this stuff as it isn't a true EP oil regardless of what it says on the bottle).

i've just spent 3 hours looking for a compatible gear oil and its straight 90?! Lambretta Gear Oil!!!! my best mate has a scooter shop FFS!!!!!! Bloody italian contraptions!!!! :bang:
