Hi Everyone!

I've not posted for awhile cos my little Uno has been running trouble free - touch wood!

I do have a question though; a few months back I changed the gearbox oil and used a slightly lighter oil, (Castrol EP 75W-80), to see if it improved the gear shift. I normally use EP 80W-90. I've not noticed much difference but in the last couple of weeks I hear a sort of wha-wha-wha noise when driving. This may be a wheel bearing or something unrelated to the lighter gear oil I've used but I was hoping you guys might be able a recommend the best oil for the Uno 1100 gearbox?

Thanks in advance. :worship:

A slight difference in weight doesn't harm/ improve anything.
Go for synthetic gear oil if you want the best.
I use Castrol SMX-S in the gearbox of my Fiorino Pick-Up 1,7 Diesel for almost 10 years now ( 125.000mls), change it about every 30.000mls.
No problems at all, shifts like new, warm (summer) and cold (winter).

Hi,

Thanks for the tip, I'll try synthetic oil and see if it improves things.

Be careful, wrong oil will destroy gearbox. Use GL-3 oil, GL-4 or GL-5 are not suitable, as they are eating away yellow metals in older gearboxes (uno, panda...). Use engine oil if you can't get correct gearbox oil. There was a lot of talking about this in Uno and Panda sections, do a search.

Hi,

Over the last weekend and before I read your replies I drained the gearbox and put fresh EP80 oil in it. The noise appears to have gone and the car seems generally smoother when driving. Is it okay to use this grade of oil? Incidently this is a Mk2 Uno, with 5 speed box, (2001 South African model).

Thanks for all your help.(y)

I guess it's alright, but I'm not sure.
Have a look at your local Castrol site, there's an oil adviser there.
www.castrol.com
If you can't find it there, send Castrol an email, I found them always very helpfully with my questions regarding lubrication.
