I wanted to replace the gearbox oil as part of the rebuild. The gearbox was rebuilt a few years back. I removed the drain plug on the lower side of the gearbox. It needed a bit of encouragement, and once removed, no oil came out. Oh dear. The plug/copper seal didn't look like they had been removed in a while.

Anyway. Onward. I obviously want to fill the gearbox back up with gear oil.
There is a plastic plug, which i presumed is what i should use. That also needed some encouragement to undo - needed a couple of goes making a tool as the plastic is a tad soft. Anyway, i opened it ok. Behind it is not the void i was expecting but some component. I put a tiny bit of oil in there. It did go in but that doesn't seem like the right place as it was v v slow.

There is a what looks like another plug, slightly further down to the left, but i have not yet tried that.

I have looked in the various materials i have for the 230 A3000 1.9TD engine, but i can't find anything.

Can you tell me where i should be putting the gear oil please ( i don't want to put it in the wrong place)?

The allen key plug inline with the clutch cable may be the filler.
As a rough guide it will be approx. inline with the drive shafts in diff but obviously at front of gearbox.
Don't know what that plastic plug is, but if higher than the actual filler it may be why it is dry.:)

Hi, There are quite a few variants to the 1.9td gearbox. Mine, for example, has a dipstick, but most seem to go with find a hole and pour it in. The speedo drive shaft hole is favoured by most. Fiat have a lot to answer for. Best of Luck, Ian.

I have taken out the sensor (I have no idea what it does) and popped oil down there. Put borescope in first, couldn't see much, but I saw one gear that looked ok.

@sprie I think that your "sensor" will be the reversing light switch.
