Recently did a clutch job on a Fiat 500.

After the clutch change I started the car and could get into all gears fine but noticed that the gear stick wasn't returning to centre.

Realised I had forgotten to connect the top gear selector linkage (under the battery tray) :bang:.

So removed the battery tray and bolted the gear linkage bracket back into it's place and connected the gear linkage cable but now I find that the gear stick sits all the way to the left (which means I can't get to 3, 5 or reverse).

Tried adjusting the cable by winding it all the way in but this hasn't helped.

I can't seem to get the spring loaded bracket further left to allow for the gear linkage cable to sit in the correct position.

Thought I'd ask here in case anyone has come across this?

Cheers.

I did an input shaft bearing replacement 6 months ago and I had had the same problem as you do. I had subsequently rectified the issue. The discussions are in Punto Mk II thread there. I had also taken some photos for what I did wrong. Good Luck.

Thanks all.

A friend recommended removing the selector mechanism from the gearbox. Relatively easy to get out (only held in by 5 or 6 bolts). Removed the mechanism and found that the top selector shaft was not in sync with the bottom one. Mechanism now back in the car and I can get into all the gears.

Assuming this happened when I first started the car after the gearbox install as I hadn't installed the top gear linkage cable correctly allowing it to go out of sync when I went into the gears.
