Just looking into fitting the new gearbox. I can see the gearbox oil drain plug but I can't see where you fill it. Also how do you know when it's at the right level?
Also how do I tell which gear it's in before I connect it up to the linkage?

Fill plug should be near clutch end at lowish level, fill it till it overflows.
Dont think you need to worry about gear just connect and then try it through the gears.
As a guide stick should be in vertical position in neutral you can adjust using the two tunnel bolts.
I suggest you check you can select all the gears on the bench before fitting then you know any problem is not with that and probably positional adjustment.

So now the gearbox is going in but I have a couple of queries. How do you set up the clutch cable tension? Also this is a 126 gearbox with the starter to the side and I've not got enough length on the battery cable to reach the starter. has anyone else encountered this and how did you get around it? I've tried tugging on the cable to get some slack but it's not budging.

I set the clutch by laying underneath with the cover plate off so I could see the clutch then I had someone in the car working the pedal and set it so it dissengaged with a little travel on the pedal.
With regards the starter I fitted to old 500 bell casing to the new 126 box so the starter was in the same location
