Technical Gear Selection Problem

Got a 1994 Tipo 1.4 that will only stay in 1st 3rd and 5th if you keep the gear lever held forward.

Don't think it's a gearbox issue, feels more like a selector lever issue.

Has anyone experienced this before?

Gearbox end control pivots etc. They pivot on the steering arm and make it jump out of the forward gears when it's not working properly. I can't remember if it's when they're loose or when they seize up.
