General gear knob

how the hell do i take this off my uno . thought they would screw off but they dont . its like some sort of cover ! tried to slip it off but it wont take it ! and i dont want to do too much damage. any idea guys ?

FIRE!!!

By far the best, and most exciting way to remove these moulded on jobbies is with fire!

Seriously i have done this myself and seen it done, on both occasions it worked perfectly.

Get a damp towel and place it around the base of the gear stick

Light the knob

Wait about 30 - 45 sec and lift the towel up and off with stick with the knob in your hand.

You should be left with a nasty plastic burning smell, but a completely clean gear stick!

Dont get carried way watching the attractive blue flame, remember you did just set light to your car!

slight variation:

angle grinder just at the base of the knob, serves two purposes:
1) removes nasty rubber knob
2) shorter shift

and what gearknob are you trying to fit? most just go over the stick, and screw in the allen key bolts?

no, they normally bolt on

im not sure if you can just saw the stick shorter the uno one i had a 1994 uno and when i looked under the gaitor it seemed to have more than just a stick, looked like some spring thing with plastic all round it

what type you want? a sports looking one? iv got a blue and silver one here if any help useless to me cos my cars orange so it wont suit it in the slightest lol

usually get the hacksaw out, i have a nasty scar tho where it slipped off as i looked up and took my thumb down to the bone and sawn a piece of bone off

my uno 999fire had to push down to get reverse are turbots the same cos surely with this mechanism fiting a new gear knob may become a bit of a bother
and shortening the stick whould be almost imposible
