hmmm,
not too helpful im afraid!

ive already cut the rubber ball off.
there is a plastic moulding underneath.
if i cut that off is there anything underneath? metal rod or something?
that way i can bolt the gear knob onto the metal rod...LIKE A NORMAL CAR
lol.

i didnt understand the part you said about the bushes? i might leave this as my gear box is pretty perfect.

cheers

oh yea and im never selling this car so not bothered about putting the old knob back on one day :p

OK, yes you have to hacksaw through the plastic moulding (about the size of a golf ball), which will leave behind just the shaft (metal rod) of the gearlever (no thread). Hopefully your 'fitting kit' will cope with this!

The bushes are the replaceable parts in the linkage. You'd be surprised at the difference it makes if you get all the slack out by replacing the bushes. A lot more difference than just changing the knob... ah well :)

oh right! well il be changing the bushes soon then!!!

by cutting the plastic will i ruin the rest of the mechanism?

No, but you could cut the seats or the dashboard by accident ;)

I suggest taking the lever out before you work on it (if you have a vice/workbench handy). Otherwise, just take care with the hacksaw in the car.

The replacement bushes are pretty much essential on old Mk1 Unos which is probably what my earlier advice related to, not sure how the Mk2 wears in comparison, so before you go to any trouble you might like to just compare with another Mk2 Uno to see if you're getting a decent gearshift in the first place (they are often pretty good in my limited experience, where the old Mk1 can be like stirring the Christmas pudding).

Sorry that I wasn't much help to start with; I just felt sure we'd talked about removing the gearknob before.

Please see attached a pic of a Mk1 Uno gear lever (in the rather unusual setting of a Lancia Thema engine bay; I had to bolt it to something solid because I don't have a workbench!) with the round knob sawn through and pried apart with a screwdriver (rather awkwardly because I was holding the right-handed camera) showing you the shaft with a slight recess onto which your replacement knob should fasten with a grub screw.

Cheers,
-Alex

there ya go, 4 pictures there.
best thing to do is to measure/estimate how deep the hole in the gear knob is and then cut that much off the gear stick.
just keep cutting off bits until the knob fits perfectly.
when you finish, strap the gaitor over the end of the plastic just to make it look neat as you can see from the pics.

only problem is, to put the car in reverse you have to push down the gaitor, not the knob itself. il figure a way round this soon.
