General gear knob

How do I remove the gear knob on my 1992 750 mania?
when a lot of force is applied it turns about 45 degrees anti-clockwise and back again.
Is there some special procedure?

This has come up a few times before, have a play with the search engine and see what you find. From memory it needs twisting 90 degrees, I forget which direction. I suspect most people attack it with a hacksaw and say goodbye forever. I'm yet to give in to temptation.

Any one to help ? How can I remove the gear knob on my 1993 900 Panda ?. Is there some special procedure? many thanks.
