Gear change not smooth

Hi, I have a 1.8 HLX and the reverse gear grinds pretty much everytime I put it in, is the gearbox knackered or something?

No synchro on reverse (never is) so its not unexpected for it to grind.

Could be an indication of a clutch fault but you didn't give age or mileage of the car.

i know this might sound like a really lame answer, but try putting it in 4th gear just before popping it into reverse... always works for me

Well it cant be the clutch coz ive just had mine changed and mine still does it.

anyway back to topic, mines a 1.8 R reg, at 99,600 miles and mines sometimes grinds in reverse, but if put into another gear before hand it won`t grind

bloody pixies indeed! ignore what donny lad said anyway, he`ll make sense one day, lol

Thanks - it's an r reg 66K miles. All the other gears seem fine.

My 1.8 Bravo did exactly the same. Not all the time but would grind into reverse.

The Brava is similar too. Have to disengage clutch and try again for a smoother gear change.

Mine does the same and is stiff going into first and second. It's going to the garage in the morning so I'll see what they say.

It's a 1.2 btw.

My son has just bought a 51 plate 1.6 100 sx (I think) with 42000 on the clock. Clutch about 6 weeks old and it sticks and grinds when going into 2nd only. I have booked it in for wednesday. Hopefully just a clutch adjustment thing.

Grinding when going into reverse happens on virtually every car I have driven. The advice about going into a forward gear then into reverse is sound. Always works for me.
