Ok so my clutch has completely gone on my 2002 punto, iv been quoted by the local trusty reliable mechanic £216 to fit a new one( I already have the clutch) but a relative works in a car garage, and said they think it will work out about £165 but to ring and check with head mechanic, so iv rang said mechanic and he's told me he'll check prices but will prob be cheaper for him to do it outside of work, now obviously id want to pay as little money as possible but I don't know if I have a leg to stand on if anything goes wrong if he does it as a private job, what am I entitled to if I get a mechanic to do it through their business, have I got the same rights if I get my relatives work mate to do it privately? Need to know ASAP what the better option would be, to pay less but hope for the best bla bla bla, or pay extra for a mechanic to do it and I have more rights in case it goes wrong etc etc? Sorry about the long post but its not the easiest thing to explain lol, thanks, Arran.

Get it on a receipt and you'll have comeback if it goes tits up normally (I say normally as you're supplying the clutch and not them) cash in hand though and you won't.

Ah didn't think of receipts! Do you reckon there's any way of getting a receipt even if I get it done privately? Or do I just do it through a business?? I can ask him when he rings me back what he will do if anything goes wrong, will keep updated on here lol

Hi,
personally I would expect the labour costs ( all of the cost - as you've supplied the parts) to be AT LEAST 50% more in a Garge business,
as they've got Tax , Overheads, insurances ETC to cover,
for the bloke doing it one evening for BEER Money , it's just that,
no overheads , no parts, no comeback,

if you trust him then go for it,
It's a Punto for gods sake..pretty much as simple as it gets,

Charlie

I've got the mobile mechanic doing it tomorrow while I'm away in Edinburgh, hopefully I'll return home Monday to a nice working punto again! Oh and I'm getting it done for £200 now, which isn't so bad I guess!
