Technical Fuse: rear wipe & front washers?

Evening ladies & gents,

does anyone have a fuse list handy?
I need to check if I have blown a fuse for the rear wiper and front washers, front wipers working fine.
They stopped independently a few weeks apart so will be two fuses if that's he problem. If not, it's time to start checking earths :bang:

If it is then the power supply, fuse and earth will be ok as it's the same for front and back washers

Although its a reversed current to make the pump run the other way. How is this done? Relay

No it's done at the column switch, the contacts are simply reversed

Hey guys,

Only just read your update decks. i've checked fuse 43 and 52 today and both fine.
I have no front washer but wipers OK and no rear washer or rear wiper.

The rear wiper stopped a while ago suddenly during daily usage, I can't remember if the rear washer stopped at same time. The front washers were working fine, i ran out of water this week and when i filled it up, nothing. I wonder if i've burnt out the washer pump?

Any ideas if they use a common earth or relay?

Typical as my MOT runs out on 24th Aug!!!

How can I test to see if the washer pump and rear wiper motor maybe duff or not?

I have a multimeter, anyway I can use that?

There is a common relay T12 and a common earth C10 but they are already proven ok because they also run the front wipers and they're going ok so you tell us

I think you might be lucky at it could be a coincidence that you've lost your rear wiper and your front + rear washer as they stopped working at different times otherwise you'd suspect a column switch problem and they're mighty expensive


So, check the washer pump first, is power and earth being supplied? Note the pump power and the earth go right back to the switch. Easy to check though, just remove the pump connector, put your multimeter in both the connector terminals and have someone operate the front or rear washer and see if you get 12v there. If you do then it's a poor contact there or a stuck pump



Rear wiper N16
Might be a bad earth at C30, poor electrical connection at motor or even seized motor. Check for power and earth at the motor

Hi Decks,

checked for power....
Washer pump - I have 12v when switch activated, i've cleaned all connections and still nothing so assume the pump has had it.

Rear wiper, not sure about this - with rear wiper switch turned on I have 12v when testing the middle wire (red) with either outer (blue or black with green stripe). I'm pretty sure the plug is labelled 1,2,3 where as the wiring diagram shows 2,1,3. 1 being earth.
Now, if I switch the rear wiper switch off but leave ignition on i still get 12v, as above. Any ideas? or is this as it should be.
I still don't understand how to check earths, can anyone help me out?

plus i've now got a flat battery as haven;t used the car for nearly a week, doh!

As you have 12v at the pump then it will be the pump having problems but take it out and give it a shake and try it again off the car as often it's just jammed with congealed washer fluid


Have to get back to you re rear wiper as forum page load times are horribly slow. Is everyone else getting the same? 30sec load times then straight through then 30sec again. It makes posting a real chore, no matter what you use, IE, firefox, google chrome, different computers they're all the same from here and only on this forum

OK rear wiper connector, pin 1 should go straight to earth at C30 so multimeter set to resistance and check between pin 1 and a shiny metal good earth on the car. Looking for hardly any resistance just a few ohms at most.

NB power is supplied to the motor all the time with ign on (so watch your fingers) and when the wiper reaches the parked position the earth is stopped.

The fact you're getting 12 v supply to both the pump and the rear wiper is a good sign

i have 1.53 ohms at the earth so that seems to be ok. Anything else you can think of Decks?

As a precaution I've purchased a rear wiper motor and washer pump from ebay scrapper, very reasonable actually.

Substituation with another rear wiper motor might be by far the quickest and safest bet

As you have 12v at pin 3 on the motor and a good earth at pin 1 then the next step would be to just touch an earth contact to pin 2 which should send the motor on a cycle and then park. If the motor doesn't move then it's an internal fault in the motor or it's seized. They're powerful motors so watch your fingers

If the motor then works then there's a problem with the earth signal from the column switch to the motor which could be the stalk or with wiring to the motor. So you'd check to see if there is an earth signal at pin 2 when the rear wiper is selected

thanks again, as the wiper slowed then stopped halfway across the rear screen, i'm pretty sure now the motor has gone, will update when parts arrive

Well used parts arrived yesterday and all is well. Replacement rear wiper motor, washer bottle and pump for £35 delivered so not bad at all.
Everything now working as normal so time to get an MOT to find out what else is broken, LOL. I'm putting my money on handbrake not holding evenly.

Well used parts arrived yesterday and all is well. Replacement rear wiper motor, washer bottle and pump for £35 delivered so not bad at all.
Everything now working as normal so time to get an MOT to find out what else is broken, LOL. I'm putting my money on handbrake not holding evenly.
