I need to remove the fuse box on an 08 1.4 8v to check for moisture. The lights are randomly switching (or high and dipped together, I'm not sure) to high beam, without the dashboard indicator. The consensus here seems to be that moisture below the fuse box is the problem.
I have disconnected the battery earth, removed the main 12V feed, but the fuse box seems fixed in. When I pull up it moves perhaps 1mm and appears to hit something. Is there a catch or something that I'm missing?
In the meantime I've removed the main beam fuses and am going to try and see if the dips go out when it flicks or not. Not an ideal situation, so any help would be gratefully received.
 
Just as a heads up, my lights were also going mental for no particular reason - every time I indicated left, the dipped beams switched off then back on again, which was pretty damn dangerous as I'm sure your problem is too! Turned out the contacts in the stalk cluster had deteriorated (probably due to moisture) to the point where they were doing completely random things; changing the light/wiper clusters solved the problem, and a new unit cost about £80 with forum discount from PartsWorld UK. I'd recommend getting it swapped over by a FIAT garage though, considering the steering wheel airbag.

Thanks for that. Definitely the next thing to check. But does anyone know how to get the fuse box out? Should it just lift, or is there some trick?
 
Remove battery cables, remove the battery, remove red lead into fuse box. Then you have to twist the fuse box 90° degrees towards the wing. Disconnect the 4 main cable connectors from the bottom of the fuse box. Can be a pain to get off but push the grey lever one way or another and they should pop off. The fuse box is held on with 2 lugs so should now pop off.

There was moisture in two of the three plugs. Drying it all out fixed the lights.
I seem to remember somebody saying they had made a waterproof case for the fusebox. Does anyone know if the instructions are on here?

Hi do you know if the fuse box is coded to the car ?
 
What are you talking about?
How the fuse box (simple mechanical thing, just a bunch of connectors, for fuses/relays) can be "coded to the car"?
Rephrase the question (or tell us what's the problem, are you looking for replacement or what?).
There are 2 types of boxes: rectangular (oldest Grande), square shape (from 10/2008 up). That's it.
Some pins/contacts may not be populated (depends on the version/trim).
 
Hi thank you for the reply sorry very new to the whole forum thing I have a Punto Grande 2006 which I am have some very random electronic issues with light randomly coming on or off I had the steering wheel starts changed and some other bits and pieces done and then a electrical mechanic indicated to me that it might be the fuse box, So my question is would the fuse boxes need coding to the car, all the information I can find on the fuse box indicates that both fuse box on the fiat Punto are in some way connected to command unit.

  • Body Control Unit (BCU): While the under-bonnet box handles engine-related items, the main Body Control Unit (controlling interior lights, locks, etc.) is typically located inside the car behind the dashboard/glovebox area, not under the bonnet.
But any post on here I could of people saying that there have changed or work on the fuse box didn't mention anything around that attach control units.
 
All cars in the world have the modules "somehow connected" to the fuse/relay boxes.
And yes sometimes there is some "electronic circuitry" to actually activate the relay (most of the time it's a direct control from ECU or Body).
But that does NOT mean the fuse box is "coded to the car" (like the car will reject the box, because there's a VIN mismatch).

Instead just learning the structure and the vocabulary, you made-up your own picture of what's (supposedly) going on.

Yes, some cars may have more sophisticated fuse/relay boxes with some active electronics (or even LIN/CAN communication), but not Punto.
