General Fuel Pump

Well i passed my test last thursday and had to wait all weekend to monday so i could get to armagh to tax my car! So car taxed i set off to clock up some miles staying close to home and then getting further away i collected my new wheel nuts, went to see if my cd player could be fitted! which it couldn't! and then just drove about for a while, then coming round a corner second gear then i accelerated away from the corner. Then to my shock discover that a whole colourful arrangement of lights on the dash! went to pull over no brakes went to accelarate no engine then realised the car was in gear and not shuddering! confused! anyway i was on a hill and it rolled to the bottom on a bad bend buses, cars, lorries steaming round the bend slamming on the brakes to avoid me! The car turns over but will not fire and a quick call to grandad and the mondeo to the rescue although i had to buy a tow poll! towed it to work the guys laughed and set about finding the fault everything is fine in the engine bay belts all good all narrowed down to the fuel pump in the tank nice brimmed this morning by me!

Anyway is this going to be a expensive job to fix?

I guess its back to the bycycle to work in the morning!

Don't know about price, but if its the 1.0 / 1.1 / 1.4 SPI Non turbo Uno IE (with cat), its a case of

Moving the rear seats forwards, so you can see under the bit you sit on.
Move the carpet.

Remove the black plastic cover (2 screws)

Now you can see the top of the pump / level sender it has 2 fuel hoses and 2 electrical connectors.

Have a replacement pump before you remove the old one!

Don’t smoke when your car is full pf petrol fumes either.

Guess it’s a case of carefully removing the fuel lines -catch the leaking fuel!!! note which fuel line goes where. The 2 electrical connectors can't go back wrong as 1 is 3 pin the other 2. Remove them too

Now unscrew the nuts / bolts holding the pump in the tank. Don't drop them in (if you can). Make sure you have lots of ventilation as Petrol fumes isn’t good (perhaps lethal?? :dead.

Lift out old pump / level indicator unit.

Fit new one / second hand one WITH A NEW SEAL!!!!

Hook up and off you go

My fuel pump went down this morning so I'm hoping the above is true with a small price tag .

Bit of an update..

Remove the petrol cap to ease any tank pressure before removing the pump - had a think about it before starting so I didn’t get a face full of fuel

Tie string to both pipes and the wires in case they drop down. I’d guess it will be a bugger to re find them if they drop down.

I removed the fuel pump to check if the rotor was just blocked / jammed..

Gave it a knock and connected it direct to the battery and... No Joy .



Scratched my head and tried it reverse polarity and hay presto Bzzzzzzzz then in forward Bzzzzzzz .
Put it back in the car and after priming a couple of times, locked up again.

So without removing the pump I reverse polarities it by removing the rear 2 pin connector and putting 12V the wrong way across the pins (with a fuse inline just try each way till you can hear it Buzzz), then reconnected the proper wire and got my car going.

Its now a bit hit and miss, so I think I'll need to remove it and flush the pump fully..

Till then I have the kit to reverse polarise the pump each time it fails.

This is the pump on the assembly which contains level sensor


However the Electric fuel pump can be split from the assy and serviced alone


This bare fuel pump (apparently) also fits "SYTEC REPLACMENT IN TANK FUEL INJECTION PUMP

I was Under the impression that the MK2 Uno with carb (1990 - 1992) has a mechanical fuel pump :S

I am waiting on my fuel pump coming from england! So hopefully should have it in work on monday or tuesday!
