General Fuel gauge needle stuck in the middle

My 2002 Ulysses Mk1 has it's fuel gauge needle pointing to the middle position of the gauge. For about the last 2 months the fuel gauge needle has been working correctly for some periods and pointing to the centre of the gauge for some periods. From about 2 weeks ago the fuel gauge needle is now permanently pointing to the middle of the gauge regardless of fuel level. Can anyone tell me what's likely to be causing this fault?

Hi, I've got a 2004 2.2 eleganza and we had a problem with the fuel guage reading 1/4 full. Didn't realise we had a problem until it had stopped working (No fuel) and it was in the garage and they had the tank off to check the pump.
They sorted it with a software update and cleaned the electrical connectors to the dash displays.
