I have got the head on, main fuel pump on, but not much else.

What i would like to do is get some fuel delivered to the main fuel pump so i can try and judge when cylinder 1 injector gets the fuel delivered to it, and then i can work out where the gear needs to be.
Having popped a new battery in, i was hoping with a minimum of fiddling i could get some fuel to the main pump, but no such luck.

I am reasonably sure the in-tank fuel pump is not kicking in - whilst I did not test it before i refitted it, it must have worked before the cambelt broke.
I have put about 5 gallons of diesel in, and there is no twitch or movement on the fuel gauge either.

The connector immediately above the fuel tank is connected.
This then leads to another connector below the fuel filter, and that is now connected to the main harness.

When i turn on the ignition key, i get the glow plug light on which then disappears, the brake warning light on (hand brake is on) and battery sign on (as engine is not running).

There are a whole load of connectors that i have not connected, as many of these go to components not refitted (e.g. head lights, radiator fan etc).
I have connected 2 connectors to the main fuel pump (one of the front, and one on the side).

Is there something obvious I have missed, without which fuel in-tank pump/gauge will not work?

To ask a daft question, does it have a submersible electric pump in the tank? Some earlier engines relied on transfer pump, integral with injection pump, to suck fuel from tank. Quich check would be number of connected pins on connector at tank or elsewhere.

Don't hesitate to ask me daft questions, there some basic things I miss.
..and to be honest, when I removed the intank parts when I was cleaning the tank I didn't notice something that I thought was a pump: I did note the sender float component and a spring loaded end.
Anyway, the connector has 3 wires. I was thinking of disconnecting it , and then using a test battery but didn't want to risk damaging anything, would hate to have to drain and drop the tank again.

I think it was this one
Still not clear to me if this has inbuilt pump.

Just looked at that. Nary a pump in sight.
Ok. So to get fuel to the injector feed pipes ( injectors themselves not yet installed), I close off fuel filter bleed, put cambelt on, put starter motor on and get starter motor to turn engine, and hopefully it pulls fuel through?
Or is there another procedure?
Slightly worried there is nothing showing on fuel gauge.

Is there not a hand priming button on the fuel filter? If you have battery connected without starter motor fitted TAKE CARE. Make sure that free end of starter cable is well insulated.

To energise fuel gauge you will need 12V to igniton switch, and switch it on.
