My '01 Punto 1.2 8v makes a high pitched whistling sound when you turn the heater on. However, the noise is only there if you have it on either setting 1 or 2. Maybe its because the noise of the fan itself drowns out the whistling, but you can't hear it on settings 3 or 4.

Its a weird noise, that you can hear slowing down when you turn the fan off altogether, and speeding up if you turn the fan on.

Its there regardless of temperature setting, and regardless of airflow setting.

Anyone know of basic things that I can check myself before putting it in for what is likely to be a costly repair job?

look down the ducts into the passenger department! if it as makes a loud BIRRRRRRing sound then it will be in the fan its self! mine is under the glove box ! it just unscrews and should go back together how it came apart!

The whistling noise is just the air rushing across something at a cartain speed, try closing each vent one at a time and try redirecting the air (mine whistles on 2 but only from the slots below the windscreen)

I get that pain in the arse causes you to switch it off its so irritating and freeze to death in winter. If you look under the glove box you will find the fan. Tear this appart and put some WD40 on the centre of the fan. Walla this will cure your problem.
