Hey dudes!

Ive got a 1994 Cinq SX. A week ago I couldn't start my car. AA came out and changed the knackered battery in it. Since then ive had a VERY odd problem.[?]

When I put my front wipers on one notch, it no longer does intermitent.[:0] It goes at standard speed identical to two notches. Also when you switch the wipers off, they stop instantly and don't return to the bottom of the window unless you have jedi reflexes[8D] on the lever.

:DAny help much appreciated.:D

Try looking to see if a fuse has blown, AA man may have popped one when connecting the battery back up.

I have considerably more mods, THAN YOU!

Have a look to see if there's any loose wires, the fact that the wipers won't 'park' suggests something may have come adrift.

The wires to the wiper motor itself - it sounds like the connection may have been 'pulled' and you could have lost a 12v connection into the unit.

Usual caveats apply: my car is a Panda, but there's a in lot common..

I took my wiper motor to bits this morning because the intermittantly working wiper had stopped :( can't get the bugs off to see where I'm going.

There are two parts to the wiper operation, ignoring the selector switch:

the self parkimg is an integral part of the motor assembly - on the end of the motor there are three circular tracks, two look pretty much continuous, the other has a "pip" where the park position is.
There are three wipers on these tracks and the pins they are riveted to have a circuit board soldered to their ends, the board contains a relay (and a few other bits) to take the motor switching load off the little tracks.
This board has a 3 pin connector out (2 wired) for the motor, and a 5 pin connector in (3 wired) which has earth on black, and the other two are powered like this:

____________ign on wiper off________intermittant_________continuous

blue/green_________0________________+12(pulsed)____________+12
orange__________ +12(for parking)______+12__________________0

The intermittant operation is provided by a fancy relay in the fusebox which pulses the +12 on the blue/green.

I would imagine your lack of parking is the cabling to the motor which has been disturbed, but I might be wrong.
Equally, your Cinq might be nothing like this, but I doubt it.

P.S. for Pete:
the fault I had was down to bad design: the relay body in the wiper circuit board is one of the contacts for the power to the motor. This is a large heat sink to warm up when you solder it all together.
It was a dry joint. Now redone with a Weller gun: OK.
I wonder what fraction of a Lire Magnetti Marelli saved designing the relay like that??

Usual disclaimer.... mine's a Panda.. blah, blah..

There's sound proofing under the bonnet up against the bulkhead, held on with the odd self tapper and the rubber trim over the top edge.
(I expect Pete will correct me, if this isn't quite right.)
Behind this, on the passenger side, the motor is bolted to a bracket.

Regarding going faster, on mine - it has two speeds: flat out, and stopped :p
The first pull on the switch gives "intermittant" - I.E. it just does one wipe flat out and stops. Then does another.. etc.

The motor is quite small, and probably doing about as much as it can :)

I'd imagine the motor transplant to be the easy bit...
but the switchgear ( fitting the column and other cowling), and appropriate wiring, that's another matter.

I don't think I'll bother on the Panda(s) :D

my sei has 3 speeds i believe,

fast intermittent(just too fast to be useful)
on (usual wipe wipe type thing)
fast (soo fast it looks like they will fall off)

but tbh i can't remember for definate, but i'll check next time i'm in the car :)

SEI POWER

NOS Guzzlers are just lower beings :D
