Hello Forum,

I have a `whine`. I need to change my front right wheel bearings. Is this a diy job? Easily doable?

Is there a descriptive procedure somewhere on the `net?

Thanks.

Hi Anders, it's definitely DIY, just make sure you order or buy the new LH and RH spindle nuts with the bearings.
This video caters to another model, but the work is the same on a drum-braked 500, and it shows how to do it with no special tools.

On second thought, I should better explain the similarities/differences between the video and your (drum) case.
After removing the wheel, the drum is retained only by the spindle nut (one has a right-hand thread, the other a left-hand thread).
It might take a little persuasion to remove the drum, as the brake lining might have dug a slight groove inside the drum, and left a lip that catches on the brake shoes. AVOID breathing the dust as it's likely to contain asbestos.
From there on, subsitute "drum" for "disc carrier" in the video commentary.
It's also a good idea to have a couple of brake-cleaner aerosol canisters on hand to clean away the dust and old grease. Hope this helps !

When I have the old bearing races out ,I grind their out edges down so they fit back in the hub and so use them as a drift to knock the new ones back in true.
