Technical Front strut slop

I had a friend helping diagnose some suspension noises. He has a hoist and lots of knowledge. We found a sway bar strut that was toast and one of the rear shocks was leaking. On the hoist with the wheels unsupported the top of the strut was able to move quite a bit. Is this 'normal'? With the car on the ground there was no movement, very solid. TIA Cheers, Dave

Some strut top movement is indeed normal. Has been a running issue with some MoT testers in the UK but guidance was issued that they* should only fail if "excessive". Which is a bit of an area of interpretation!

*Not just 500s to be fair, and maybe not just Fiats.
