Hi Can anyone tell me if a caliper wind back tool is needed to replace the front brake pads on a 2005 Croma 1.9td????
 
No, they just push in as normal - but you will need a star drive socket when you come around to replacing the discs.

These "star drive" bolts all appear to be "stretch bolts" accoring to Fiat and have to be replaced an not re-used.

Personally I'm a little confused on this as I get different information from Vauxhall on replacing some of these compared to what Fiat say.

In the absence of any other advice I would limit the number of times you re-use these bolts. Once to twice is probably OK.

Stretch bolts are a quick, cheap and repeatable way for vehicle manufactures to get accurate and repeatable torque values without having to have calibrated tools. Basically they rely on the elastic nature of the bolt to 'pull' pieces together. The down side is that elasticity is potentially limited and constant reuse degrades the bolts integrity and over tightening stuffs the bolt.
 
Ooooh! Same for the big 19mm bolts which hold the caliper hanger onto the Bravo's hub?

I've had the Tipo's hanger on and off loads of times and never noticed an issue - Plus torque settings are only really valid at new - rust, age, heat cycles etc can change the tightness. The 19mm bolts were super tight, then easy then super tight again with rust buildup... that would give a false reading on a torque wrench.
 
Well I've not yet had the pleasure of removing / replacing these bolts so I reserve all opinions until I'm there myself.

Interesting thing is that I doubt garages replace these bolts everytime AND MORE IMPORTANTLY the rear suspension recall for tracking problems (can't remember the campaign number) required several of these bolts to be undone yet only one to be replaced.

The one to be replaced was the "cam head" bolt which adjusts the camber. I've seen/handled one of these bolts and the bolt shaft was machined with longitudinal groves some 3mm+ wide.

I'm thinking, having seen the bolt that the reason it was/is changed is that the cam adjustment is greater to that originally fitted.

I think I need to order up the original bolt and the campaign bolt to check if there was a "cam" offset change. With the original bolt the lowest negative camber I could obtain was 1.6deg. (if I remeber correctly). Maybe the newer/replacement bolt would have enabled a 1deg. or less camber to be achieved.
