I'm a bit of a div when it comes to cars but eager to learn

Yesterday I tried to start my 1999 Marea HLX Weekend after being off the road with the battery dissconected for 7 months. I charged the battery then attempted to jump it from another car. Apparantly this was a mistake. The RAC guy reckons that I have damaged the ECU by trying to jump it as there is no spark or injector pulse, also the code key light does not go off. The slightly fishy electrical burning smell which emitted from the car kind of gave a hint that something had been fried and it seems like it may be the ECU.

Oops. :bang:

Can anyone give me any advice on where to pick up a second hand ECU as I hear that buying one new will probably cost more than the car is worth. Apparntly it's the Bosch 3.1 ECU I need to get hold of.

Also how easy are they to replace and are there any code/key issues which may occur?

Thanks in advance

did you connect the jump leads in reverse ?. and have you checked all fuses first before blaming ECU's ?. If you find a fuse blown, does it blow again on replacement ?

Fuses tested and fine.

I must admit I didn't even know there was a right or wrong way to connect the jump leads so very possibly. This is the first car I have owned that was manafactured after 1988 so it has never been an issue before. I didn't even know it had an ECU until 2 days ago!

Does anyone know if it is even possible to replace the ECU with a second hand one as I have been told I need a virgin ECU from a dealer which may be more expensive than it's worth?

there are people here who will virginise an ECU for you, but like i said before, i'm not convinced its broken.

the injector light on the dash commin on with the ignition and then going out after a few seconds is the self test, if it does not go out or does not come on atall then it suggests there is a problem.

i have a 20v 147 ECU here if you wish to purchase it but you will have to PM me about it.

When you say the fuel injector light doesn't come on, do you mean this is with a charged battery attached, and the other dash lights are coming on ? You may well have nailed your battery if you connected it the wrong way round. ...

Yes charged battery attached and other dash lights coming on. The fuses were all checked by the RAC when originally diagnosed and were all in working order.
