if you are in the new post entry screen, entering your post, click on the screen outside of the text entry window, then click any of the smilies, you will see they get pasted onto the forum at the top left, outside the text entry window.

Haha ... nice find. It seems vB puts the smileys in the active object, not specific to the posting box object.

Saying that though, we are a few revisions behind (I haven't had a chance to update it yet) - so it might be fixed in the latest version.

enter some text, then click on the empty space at the left of the text entry form, then click a smilie. if that doesnt work press F11 then it should work.
