FOPP- the record shop

FOPP- the record shop

It was named after an Ohio Players song, set up in the early 80s and for the last couple of years has been a great record shop, home of cheap cds and stuff and new vinyl releases.

Much better pricing and atmosphere in store than any HMV. Its just a shame someone in their business decided to take on music zone without factoring a lot of things into the equation

Negotiator's link has more info

The one in horsham has closed now apparently, but last week the one in cardiff was still open, probs getting rid of stock etc first. Hadnt been in one yet, shame theyr going! few peeps said they were gd pricing etc.

they were really great

i think the move the did to take over the collapsed music zone would have paid off about 4/5 years ago but it was just to late in this cack economy of ours and its a sign that this will happen to a lot of companies.

I read as well last year FOPPs turnover was £40million, which looks ok, but actual profit was only £180k. Divide that by the 100 stores and each store makes £180 a year in profit, or just £15 a month profit, which is scary.

The year before they didnt make any profit

Online stores are beating these kind of places on price easily so there is little chance for the smaller companies.

For T's benefit, the nearst Fopp is 200 yards from Glasgow Central. or it was!

Aberdeen ones been shut since the news broke. Crying shame, I've always found the staff incredibly clued up on their music, to the point most could name singles etc off of random cds. The whole music industry seems in turmoil at the mo, and I can see it getting worse before it gets better!

I was saddened when I read the news on this as I loved shopping in FOPP, reminds me of last few years at school and Uni heading into FOPP with mates and buying CD's and the cheap but limited range of books they also kept.

Of course we all used the "Suck it and See" that they did where they encouraged you to buy CD's you were not familiar with give them a listen and if you didn't like it return and exchange for free for another CD, so of course it meant you recorded it and then got two CD's for price of one.

Its a small amount, but at least the six are being saved.

almost anywhere will do an exchange, i once changed a cd 6 times at asda and they didnt complain. they even do it for dvd's after you watch them!! now i just download instead, saves so much time and money (and its better for the environment :D )

True, but range in ASDA is not as good as a proper record shop as they only really stock the mainstream commercial stuff, and the whole "suck it and see" philosophy was try stuff you have not heard of, or are maybe unsure of, if you like it cool keep it, if you don't bring it back no quibble exchange for another title, as of course a retailer by law does not have to exchange anything just because you don't like it.

I still prefer to buy all my CD's as I like the art work on cases, and I prefer browsing as well cos then you can pick up stuff you may not have before like imports and Limited Edition stuff, or even as I had done in FOPP in Glasgow heard something they were playing and bought that because I had never heard of it before and liked the sound of it. I like spending my time looking, and TBH saving a few pounds makes no differance to me when I get a better experience spending the money and have a nicer product as well.

But each to there own :D
