The glow plug heater light (amber light on the left that looks like a coil) it usually comes on when the ignition is on, and then goes out after a few seconds but once i then start the car after about 15 seconds it comes back on and flashes for about 15 seconds. It's only started doing this in the last couple of days.

Can anyone tell me what this means please?
it's on a 2001 1.9 JTD 100HLX

Cheers

Its the diesels warning light, you need to take the car to Fiat for a Diag. It means theres a problem with the preheat i think, which could mean glow plugs but your better off getting it diagnosed before it turns serious. I've never seen it flash for a faulty glow plug, so dont go changing glow plugs.

If its a 105JTD it can be a glowplug (mine is doing the same thing because one of my plugs is on its way put) or something with the glow plug system.

Get a multimeter and measure the Ohms on the plugs. On 20deg C it should be around 8ohm.

I changed the fuel filter the other week and had to disconnect the preheat plug on the filter housing. I refitted the plug afterwards but did notice there was another plug under the filter area that didnt seem to have anywhere to plug into.

Could it have something to do with that?

cheers

I would say yes. There are three plugs on the JTD100 fuel filter, one to the sensor at the bottom and two side by side at the top of the filter mount.

Hi Joske
I dont spose you have a picture of the connections on the filter?

I will try and get photo of mine tomorrow, but it had a single connector to the housing (with two wires connected to it) on the passenger side. I couldnt see anyother connections though.

It's a JTD 100

One is connected underneath the filter, black block, you prob removed this from the old filter and refitted it to the new one. The other two clip onto the main housing on the side with the power steering fluid. I'll try get pics up soon but not today. Make sure you've got the correct fuel filter aswell as there are variants and the wrong one will prob trigger the fault aswell.

I also own a JTD HLX so do know which filter you need.

Thanks Joske

I didn't remove any connections from underneath the old filter, so maybe I have the wrong filter fitted.
I will take some pictures tonight and post them up tomorrow.

Cheers

Ok, shows how good my memory was! There were in fact two connectors on the fuel filter at the top, both of which were removed and refitted when i replaced the new filter, but i didnt see any other connections or remove any?

these two pictures show my filter, you can just make out the loose plug tucked up by the black box on the right (i put it there as i didnt know what else to do with it, i found it hanging down under the fuel filter once i had removed the old one)

Thats correct. Now under the filter (actually screwed onto the filter, unless you chucked it) there should be a black round electrical thing that you screwed into the bottom of the filter. That plug connects to that.

If you have a white piece of plastic that looks like a run off for water then you've not swapped the bits over. That white thing you throw away and fit the black round electrical sensor back on. By the way that black thing doesn't come with the filter, you just reattach it to the new filter.

I hope you've still got it.

P.s Undoing that filter now after x amount of miles may cause it to leak slightly around the top once refitted. Not a biggy, but atleast you know.

I reckon once you refit that plug everything will be ok.

The same thing happens on mine, light flashes for a few seconds after start up. I just assumed the JTD's had a post glow system (as a common rail injection dont use glow plugs to help it start) like a lot of the modern diesels to help improve the fuel burn when cold.
I'll take mine to work tomorrow and see if theres any fault codes stored.

Ok, wasnt aware of that. I'll plug in anyway and if I find a fault I'll let you all know.

Thanks Joske and Sven.

I think this must be the problem (this is the first fuel filter change i have done on this car) the old filter didn't have this black sensor on the bottom so I couldnt swap it over.

Sven can I ask where you got that diagram from? I have both the haynes bravo manual and the lindsay porter one, and neither have anything useful on the JTD fuel filter.

One other thing, the flashing light has only occurred recently and the previous filter had been on there (with no sensor) for 10K+ miles?

Any one know where I would get a replacement sensor and or what it is called/part no?

thanks again!

If its been like that without the plug on for X amount of miles, then i can only assume that sensor is not at fault. You will need to take it for a Diagnostic at Fiat.

Joske

Nope the only warning light i get is this one (and before last week no warning lights at all). I've had the car for nearly a year now, and done nearly 18k miles (3 oil changes but only the one fuel filter change) It has just over 100k on the clock and is still giving ~50mpg. Although it does need a new maf (and has done for the last year)

I will try and find a local fiat delear and get it diagnosed

cheers again
