Right, took the airbox off earlier to have a look at getting rocker cover off for painting. Looked in the front part of airbox and there is, what i thought, a sensor... but no wires.. Hmm. I looked in from the hole on the left, were the rubber pipe connects and i couldn't see in, turns out its a spring system that opens the "flappy thing" covering the whole.

A. WTF is it and what is it's purpose?
B. I couldnt understand how it worked, so i'm guessing that because its not obvious and there's no moving parts going into the airbox, all the air being sucked in is coming from the foil tube on the manifold.. not good me thinks.

I've heard people mention about poor air, so fixing something in the airbox open.. is this it?

Cheers, Craig.

 :bang:

We were all talking about these in some threads on the run up to the Gaydon meet :p

Something to do with the air intake, and it moves about depending upon engine temp. If it stops working the car starts running roughly or something. I'm not to sure personally. Someone else will come along and tell all though :p

Hi Craig,

The foil tube is only to provide a bit of warmth to the air going into the throttle/carb in cold contitions; car works fine without it... Sparkys done 18,000 miles like that 'til last weekend. The flappy thing in the airbox is to let air from outside the car into the cabin through the holes in the bonnet, it's controlled off a switch on the dash. The air going into the filter comes through the tube that clamps on the right hand side of the filter box (looking at the car from the front).

By the way, if you take the cam cover off make sure you've got some RTV silicone instant gasket stuff for where the gasket changes direction going over the cam bearings at each end...

Hope this helps...

Having no idea what we're talking about but struggling to get back on topic I wonder what that thing is for... sureley the more air you can provide the carb/throttle to play with the better... I wonder why they wanted to restrict the airflow...

High flow air filters being a performance upgrade and all that; might it not be a good idea to take the flappy thing out??

Back to Craigs original question... I'll go back to sleep!!:eek:

This would simplify things...

I think Craig found this a while ago... Does anyone know where the airbox adaptor is available from or if indeed it is available?

Luke.

Yeah, one of the Cento lot did that. Wanted to do it to mine, the setup not paint.. although it is cool. Can't find a Cinq induction kit like that though.. and i dont want to be spending a lot of moeny on it. Wouldn't mind one of the oil breathers though.. mines fcked. think GSR make them.. but cannot get, or even find their website.

Think they come as part of induction kits.

when you take the box of the injector unit, you see the frame witht he threaded bit pointing up. i THINK you just remove this and the cento one just bolts in, as far as i know they are the same injectors.

The carb'd cars need the flappy thing more as they tend to suffer from icing in winter. The fuel injected cars seem to not have this problem but still have the flap. Maybe cause the fuel is under much more pressure and it prevents the icing?
