I am thinking about purchasing a rear roof spoiler, just a little one. how would i go about painting it and would i be able to get a goood paint match to the cars colour. my cars a light metallic green. ('Verde Lichene' it says on the tailgate) would i be able to match tht colour? or is it just a waste of time trying?

thanks

the colour match depends where you get your paint. i've tried various suppliers over the years and tbh its always a gamble. you never know what to expect the first time you try some paint.

i wouldnt advise you go out and buy a compressor and sprayer just for a spoiler, but at the same time i cant advise anyone to paint anything with rattle cans because the finish is never very good. you can easily tell when something has been sprayed with rattle cans.

i would get quotes for it to be done professionally.

if i was to go out and buy an air compresser and sprayer where would i get that colour paint from for my car? halfords? is it ready mixed?

go to a local bodyshop and ask them who they use, thats the best way to get cheap paint locally. you can then order paint by code (also give paint name).

if you buy cellulose it will come as pure cellulose paint. you then need to mix it with thinner which you can also buy from the paint supplier. cellulose is easy to apply, but it does not leave a very good finsih, so it requires a lot of work to make it smooth and shiney afterwards. this is best for basic solid colours rather than modern metallic/pearl colours.

2k acrylic (2pack) also does not come premixed (you buy paint and hardener in seperate tins). you also need special thinner. it does a much better job if you get it right, but its harder to spray, and it can be dangerous stuff (should wear a ventilator, although i never have). it is good for metallic finishes.

i'm not sure if either of those types are still available since January. I know 2 pack isnt, but i think cellulose is. i've only ever used these types of paint.

water based colour coats are what you expect to see mostly these days. i've never tried it myself because i've been told its very hard to do. the colour coat still requires a 2 pack laquer to be sprayed seperately afterwards. i'm not sure what other laquer you could use (since you cant get a waterbased laquer) so i guess 2 pack laquer is still allowed? either way, water based paint is not for the DIY sprayer from what i've been told, so if both cellulose and 2 pack is now illegal, the days of DIY resprays may be over. :(

rattle cans (aerosols) use enamel. i think this will still be available, but you cant buy in bulk for DIY use, and it costs a fortune, and is too soft and easily removed.

Thanks for the help
while we're on the subject of paint and laquers i would like to ask about a small section of my car where it looks tom have been scratched or sumthing and sum1s tryed respraying it and havnt done a very good job as part of it has like bubbles and the top layer of laquer (i think thats what it is) is starting to flake off. what can i do?

flaking is usually due to painting on an already painted surface, prepping the painted surface correctly will prevent this.

bad paint jobs require a lot of prep and then a respray. use some thinner on the paint (if it is rattle can paint it should come off very easily). once its all off you can prep the surface by sanding it perfectly smooth with 1200 then 1600 wet and dry used wet. then it is ready for spraying again.

is that spraying with rattle cans or that compressed air thing?

made a new front grill for my uno with mesh once. sprayed it with rattle cans and it came out really well, this was with plenty of rubbing down and primer. but after a couple of months there were a few stone chips - baring in mind i didnt bother to laquire it! :bang: lol

the spray paint i used was "Renault navy blue" and my uno was "Lord blue" as uno paint was stupidly expensive!
the colour match was almost perfect and well worth it.

my mirrors on my brava are abit scratched, goin to give them a respray soon but this time with plenty of laquire...

edit/ and going to use the exact paint match because its a newer, more expensive car!
