As soon as my kit arrives from Mal I am going to replace the clutch in my 84 Uno with 88000km.

I have never taken a gearbox out in any front wheel drive car, my apprenticeship was on 105Es, XW Falcons and V6 Zodiac/Zephyrs!

So I am reading up the Haynes, trying to find out the tricky stuff. From what I can tell taking the D/Shafts off will the biggest issue.

However I am hoping my local garage man will give me some tips.
This is a far cry from tuning Saab ecus, much sooner do one of those.

No body told me I do not need to take the exhaust off like they say in Haynes.

And of course, I broke one stud, just as well there are 3 more!!

Clutch was/is down to the rivets!!

Easy to get out, just fell out!, bet it won't fall back in!!

And of course one inner boot is not good, and of course I never ordered one with the clutch.

Oops, clutch plate was down to the rivets!! Flywheel didn't look too flat.

$50.00 later and it looks real good now!
New impact wrench (Ampro AR3) and I am all set to put it back together, with brand new axle boots and after a bit of a clean.

Hopefully no more leaking oil on the drive, and no high engine revs in 4th and 5th, but with no extra speed!!

Sounds like you've done well.
The driveshaft boots are usually a problem on any non-Turbo Uno where the boots keep the gearbox oil in. It's also a good time to replace any perished/split outer CV boots (I like to do this by taking the inner driveshaft joint off rather than by removing the shaft from the outer CV).

The design for the inner boots seems dodgy! If you split one and didn't know, by the time you found it it would be too late for the gearbox!!

On the other hand, very good for the tripod joint to keep it cool and perfectly lubricated.

Such a simple system and easy setup. I don't know why I was nervous about it.
A bit like working on a 105E

Now I need a ball joint separator instead of my BIG Hammer.

:eek:A bit like working on a 105E

Flipping ek !!!! Another old fossil like me, never mind the 105E what about the 100E, adjusting the side valves etc.

You guys just wait till you work on an Alfa 156 or 147, the Uno will seem even simpler still ;) Once you've had the Selespeed actuator off for a third time, you'll know just where to find the universal-jointed 6mm Allen key extension 3/8" drive with the fine-toothed ratchet and long handle, and you'll even be quite used to dropping the subframe every time the anti-roll bar bushes flog out.

Hi alex,

I think I will stick with Unos and Saabs!!

Got my car back on the road today, 7 days for the axle boots to come from Cambridge (NZ) to Riverton!! Unbelievable, apparently sat in someones office for 3 or 4 days!!

Next Uno project is my 1600 Tipo block into my 84 Uno 70S another one! The first Uno I bought. See my other thread.

Taking the sump off a Saab 9000 is a bit of a trial, remove exhaust, undo rh side engine mounts, jack engine up, to give room to drop sump, after sump bolts are off (about 1.5 hours!! - seems that long - one bolt can only be got out with a ring/open ender, and if it is tight, ouch, can get about 1/8th turn at a time.

Drop sump, turn slightly, drop more turn more and out it comes!!! Ooops did I bent the oil pick up!!
