I was just thinking...

As I`ve said in the past, I like prefer FIRE engines to the 136/138/lampredi lumps & something just went through my head when checking bore & strokes of the FIRE after reading Loius Bee`s post...

Does anyone know if the 1108cc (carb model) head physically fits on the 1368cc 16v block?

I ask because I want to get an engine to lighten & blueprint in my spare time for mine, I was going to go for another 1108, but, if a 1368 block will slot under a nice, simple 1108 head, I`ll go for that instead.

Plan would be lighten & balance the flywheel, crank & rods, fit lightweight bolts to them, port & flow the head, fit bigger valves & Punto 75 cam (with electric fuel pump), make a custom inlet manifold by splicing a FIRE one onto one from something else, something like a 32/34/36 twin choke, maybe Uno/Tipo 1.4, X1/9/Strada/Delta 1.5, Strada/131/Regata 1.6, or whatever...

In theory it`d put out quite a bit more power, maybe 80 bhp+ & rev way up the rev-range, plus be safe for a possible touch of nitrous at a later date..

I dont want to go the turbo route, I dont want fuel injection, I dont want twin or bike carbs, I especially dont want to chop around my wiring, I just like old skool thats easily reversible

So, does anyone know? :)

The alternative I`ve got is to fit the wiring & running gear from the Mk1 Punto 1.6 sporting I`m breaking into my Uno.

I dont want to though...

It just goes against what I want! I`d have to sort out ECU`s & looms & crap, & it wouldnt look original.

Fundimentally I want to put the bigger bore short block under a breathed on 8v 1108 head! nothing too complex & nothing too obvious!

Fair enough
Sounds like a nice plan

Having had personal experience of X1/9s I personally wouldn't use a stock carb off that car

Then again most of the problems with the X1/9 are heat related
Because it has a tight enclosed engine bay
and uses the Lampredi engine that has the carb/inlet sitting directly above the exhaust manifold

So that carb with the crossflow FIRE head could work OK
Not sure how readily available the jets for that Weber 34 DATR are though
Found a service kit here though . . .

Thats an option, and in theory, being off a 1500, it should be jetted up fairly close to start with.

Ideally I`d want a 30/34, 32/34 or 32/36 carb though, so during normal light throttle cruising the economy would be on par with a normal Uno, with the second barrel kicking in for those booting moments! :D

I`ve even been wondering about SU`s, either a big single or small twins for a real retro look & easy parts availablity

Also the Weber 32/34 DMTL looks like an option, being fitted from 1300 Mini`s up to 1.8 Golfs & has pretty cheap parts.

I`m looking for a 1368 8V lump, a FIRE inlet (my spare 999 lump is missing its manifold & dizzy for some reason) & some carbs to play with at the moment...

Hmmmmmm
Problem with SUs would be finding an appropriate needle
We off-roaders use them on Suzuki SJ Jeeps
But we have worked out which SU off which BL car has the right needle for our 1000cc or 1300cc suzuki four pots

i also know that old minis using single SUs have problems getting through MOT emissions tests because you have to lean them out so much to get the CO down to an acceptable level and then the old A series BL engine is reluctant to idle.... so mini maniacs lean out the carb for the MOT and then richen it back again to make the car driveable

At the end of the day your Uno is italian and I reckon a Weber is the more natural and original looking choice for what you are doing

My experience of the Weber DATR of the X1/9 is that its a great carb when freshly rebuilt, with a K&N and with the right main jet.

The stock jets it comes with on the SOHC 1500 Lampredi engine in the X1/9 give it a little bit of a flat spot just before the second choke opens.
But slap a K&N on it and up the main [primary] jet by one size and it runs sweet with that 1500 SOHC, from memory you keep the emulsion tubes and secondary jet the same

What Weber did the 1500cc Lancias use?
That could be another option . . .
