Hi, I'm new to the Forum & looking to buy a Panda. Would a 1988 1000S have a FIRE engine & a carb, or is it a single point injection? Was the 5 speed an optional extra for this model? Is there much difference between a 1000S & a 1000CLX?
Thanks

Hi and welcome!
the 88 S would have a FIRE engine with carb denoted by the 1000 (999cc) the non fire engine models would have the 903cc engine
The 5 speed box would come as standard on the S - but I may wrong on this one - as the S denotes Special (also get a clock!)
The single point injection was introduced much later than this - poss 92, though not sure - but someone on here will be!
As I got both of these models all I can say is that if the S goes wrong (and it does...) it's probably easier to sort than if the CLX goes wrong...
hope this helps,
there is a wiki on the Panda btw - not sure that it answers the 5 speed gearbox Q though,
cheers
lwm

All S and CL cars will have a carb and the 999cc FIRE engine, pretty much all CLXs have injection apart from the very early ones as far as I'm aware. Injection was brought in around late 92.

I'm not sure about the 5 speed as standard, but the S had a higher trim level than the CLX. The CLX is more similar to the CL. Also doesnt S stand for Super?

Some more info for you Des.

"FIRE" engine - which took over from an antiquated 900cc cast iron block/head engine which had been going for about 30 years in various guises. The FIRE engine was all-new, cast iron cylinder block, but aluminium cylinder head engine with a modern "overhead-camshaft" design, that was lighter, more powerful & more economical then the one it replaced (and what would have been fitted in yours if it had been registered a year earlier). This engine was the first engine in the world to be built entirely by robots in Fiat's new engine plant - "FIRE" stands for "Fully Integrated, Robotised Engine".
This engine is one of the longest lasting, reliable engines in the world - mileages of 300,000 before it requires a re-build are not uncommon.(I read that in an "Auto Express" article a couple of years ago, when they were discussing "great engines of all time" ! )

Yes, of course it does - my mistake... must be the alzheimer's kicking in

actually i've got a y10 ypsilon with a 'fire' engine and 5 speed g\box...on 65k(ish) the cars still running..but it's not going back on the road...it's in italy though, but could get it to the uk..in parts or whole.if any ones interested.

1000s was 5 speed ,whereas 1000cl was 4 speed . and the "cl" has no door trims but the "s" has black door trims

lancia y10 has a bigger,different gearbox

I have just bought a 1988 1000s panda! The one most of you will have seen in the classifieds area and probably the very one that this thread is about!

Everything under the bonnet is stock - so if you wouldn't mind helping me:

What basic engine tune ups are out there for it?
Are there any de-cat or better exhaust kits available for my Panda?
Are any induction kits available any good?

I have a 1242 conversion on the cards for late March time so for now I'm improving the looks with some driving lights, a Golf front skirt, Italian style numberplates and painting a few things satin black aswell as wanting to do some improvements to the stock engine.

My target is to have a very low, stiff and mildy tuned (1242 16v) Panda that looks very subtle, striking and old school.

This project has all stemmed from wanting a Renault 5 GT Turbo but realising that with insurance costs beyond astonomical and the fact that they have all been thrashed every day of their lives by kids in tracksuits - they just aint cool anymore!

I'll start a build thread on Saturday when I get it home :D

I really wouldn't bother getting bits for the 999cc, only to find none of it will be useful to you when you fit the 16v in a couple of months.

But, for the record:
No cat converter on your car,
Exhaust is only restrictive at the manifold. You could get a cinq sporting 1108cc tubular performance manifold second hand and chop your current exhaust to fit it. 4x4 camshaft is good for 5HP. I really wouldn't do anything else though, considering your wise 16v plan. There are almost no 3rd party hop up parts for the Panda. Some that were, like strut braces, are no longer available. You should try and find a Lancia Y10 anti-roll bar.

Change the oil, plugs and filters, then make sure the timing is correctly set and everything else is working as it should.

As Lewey has pointed out, a 1988 Panda won't have a cat (they weren't mandatory until approx. 1993). For a better exhaust you'll be looking at something custom made and possibly using a free flowing exhaust manifold meant for a 'Cento Sporting.

Are any induction kits available any good?

In a word, no. They'll sound nice but that's about it. Fitting one won't liberate any noticeable power because the standard 999cc carb engine is restricted by its breathing. Unless you can increase gas flow throughout the engine changing one part on its own will do very little.

March is but two months away. Save your money on modifying the 999cc and put it towards a 1242.

Don't go too low and/ or stiff if you want to keep your car a daily driver. It will just be a pain to drive every day on British pot holed road. And mildly tuned? A good 1242 16v Sporting engine will push out around 85 bhp. Tuning the 16v isn't easy and is likely to be expensive. Plus, 85bhp in a Panda is more than enough for most people!

You ought to check how much your insurance will be for a modified Panda with a 1242 16v engine, particularly if you are a young driver with zero no-claims. In fact it may be just as expensive as insuring a standard GT Turbo. Insurance companies dislike modified cars and young drivers, so add the two together and prepare to be raped!

Don't mean to shatter your dreams but be realistic about what you want, what you can do and what you can afford. Pandas are great cars and this is a great forum, so you're in the best place for advice. Definitely check out some of the build threads (Damon's 16v "How To" and Lewey's 1.4 16v for instance) and you'll see how much is involved.

Good luck and keep the forum posted with details and pictures of your Panda (y)

Excellent!

Yeah insurance is a nightmare, especially when I'm 19 it's a rip off to have a standard car let alone any modifications listed.

The Panda is on a classic fiat policy and still costing me £890 to insure! hahah what a joke.

next year it will be cheap enough to list any modifications anyway :)

Like I said though I will get a build thread going and show you the motorbike silencer and other bits and bobs that will be going on :)
