Finding major leak on exhaust system

hi, my car failed its mot yesterday due to "major leak on the central part of the exhaust system". i've had a look today and cant find the leak. i called the garage to see if i could speak to the mot tester and they said its possible the mot tester heard it but didnt see the leak. they recommended i go down there to speak to him but avoided the question of speaking to him on the phone. anyhow, is there anything i can do to find the leak myself? i've tried the 'running a piece of paper along the exhaust' method but couldnt find anything.
