:bang:Has anybody got the definative answer on the Marea diesel 125 acceleration problem with accelerating. Ive got a 98 marea weekend that refuses to accelerate after cruising in fifth. Is it the MAF or the Airflow meter or fuel filter/air filter.

there are many possibilities so no one can give you a single answer that is guaranteed to be the problem in all instances. with enough information i can be at least 75% sure that a diagnosis is correct, but you are seriously lacking in info.

the MAF and air flow meter are the same thing. it is very often the cause of your problem, so try cleaning it with an alcohol cleaning spray.

fuel filter and air filter should be changed in line with service schedule to prevent problems in the first place.

you need to give more of a description of your problem before we could suggest anything. does it lose power completely afterwards in all gears, or just in fifth ?. Have you tried to get any codes read ?.

In relation to the acceleration problem on my 125td marea I still havnt cured it. Reading the threads it seems a common fault. After holding a constant speed in any gear for a short period the car refuses to accelerate , even though it has accelerated like a rocket to get to the constant speed. SO FAR i have replaced the air mass meter(broke mine when cleaning) , cleaned the egr valve, replaced the air filter, fuel filter .
As mentioned the only way around this problem is dipping the clutch letting the revs fall to idle then re-engaging and the car will accellerate.

Confused, and slightly pissed off.

sounds like its going into a limp mode so.. I would try and see if there are any codes stored via diagnostics before replacing anything else. I don't know the behaviour of these engines (never seen a TD125 over here), but i believe the injector pump is much like an early vag TDI system. I recall someone on the forum having the same problem, the conclusion via a dealership was the ECU was damaged due to a faulty EGR control solenoid valve, and thus was unable to control the EGR and going into limp mode..

funny thing is that there is no ecu, and no limp home mode on that engine. like you say its an old pump timng based system, a very simple setup indeed.

since it is intermittent it rules out the usual pump timing issues with this engine and the engine internals.

If the EGR is working OK it may be a problem in fuel pump governer and going back to idle frees it off. As a first try though I would put a can of diesel njector cleaner through it. I used to do this b4 MoT and take the filter off 1/2 fill that and put rest in the tank. It may take a little starting when you do this:)

eh.. though I've never seen these engines, my info tells me that there is an ECU, its a throttle pot system (drive by wire), with a fuel quantity and timing adjustment solenoid built into the pump - much like older vag TDI. EGR also has to be controlled by an ECU..

its a 98 model TD (not a JTD) so EGR valve is pneumatic and it isnt drive-by-wire.

Sorry for not replying sooner, i changed the EGR solenoid and hey presto , problem fixed. I got two of the little buggers from a vectra DTI at a scrappers for £10.:) Thanx for the advice of fellow fiat owners.

Now all i need to do is fix the annoying rattle from the engine!

good stuff.. looks like it was going to limp mode after all, as it would have been trying to open EGR at cruising speed.
